At WSSI, great design is second nature

WSSI uses the most advanced computer software and state-of-the-art techniques available today to develop practicable solutions for our clients when wetlands and streams affect their development plans.  From the largest stream restoration project in Virginia to on-site wetland mitigation to residential rain gardens, WSSI’s engineers are frontrunners in the field of environmental design.

WSSI’s engineering services* include:

  • Stream Restoration and Stabilization Design
  • Wetland Mitigation Design
  • Sustainable Site Design
  • Stormwater Wetland Systems Design
  • Stream Assessments
  • Watershed/Floodplain Studies
  • Dam Breach/Dam Safety Analyses
  • Stream and Wetland Construction Management
  • Post-Construction Monitoring

*Offered in selected states

Our stream restoration philosophy is based on the concept of Natural Channel Design,  which seeks to restore a degraded stream by mimicking, as much as possible, the characteristics of a "stable," natural system.  Changes in a watershed's impervious area or land uses can drastically alter the amount of water flowing downstream; in response, a stream will widen and incise in an effort to stabilize under the new flow regime.  This process can take decades and result in thousands of tons of sediment (and associated pollutants) being eroded and carried to downstream receiving waters.  As the stream continues to incise and become disconnected from the floodplain, the condition of the adjacent riparian area worsens, directly resulting in significant loss of streamside trees and threatening adjacent utilities.  WSSI's stream restoration designs create a stable and ecologically-functional channel that is capable of not only withstanding, but also thriving under the hydrologic conditions resulting from development.

Our wetland mitigation experience includes Virginia’s first wetland bank, Virginia's first wetland and stream bank, and Virginia's largest wetland bank.  Before putting pen to paper, we assess a site's soils and hydrologic characteristics to ensure that our mitigation sites will replace the function of those wetlands impacted by development.

Our sustainable site and stormwater wetland designs help to minimize the impact of excess stormwater runoff before it becomes a larger and more difficult problem to correct.  In this arena, we not only talk the talk; we walk the walk.  Our office is the premier exhibit of Low-Impact Development in the region,  and we add more features annually as products and technologies improve.  Our office allows us to show clients, regulators, and other interested parties how well sustainable stormwater can truly work when designed and implemented with care.

Our all-encompassing approach to natural resources consultation also means that our engineers keep abreast of the most current changes in design regulation, ensuring that we are always prepared to produce the best possible solutions for our clients.
