Accotink Stormwater TMDL Lawsuit

Fairfax County and VDOT filed a lawsuit on July 12, 2012 against the EPA to stop the implementation of the Accotink Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) requirements. The fact that Fairfax County's Board of Supervisors, a leader in Environmental Protection, put aside politics and joined forces with VDOT illustrates the unbearable magnitude of the requirements of the Accotink TMDL (Field Notes Vol 19 No. 3), which would affect both governments and all land owners in the watershed.

New Regional Supplement to COE Wetland Delineation Manual Required

On June 27, 2012, the Norfolk District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) announced via Public Notice the regional supplement to the COE Wetland Delineation Manual: Eastern Mountains and Piedmont, Version 2.0. This new supplement is to be used for all new wetland delineations in these physiographic regions of Virginia, as well as the Mid-Atlantic region, and finalizes the use of methodologies that increase the extent of the Jurisdictional Wetlands in some situations – especially floodplains and red parent soils.

INDUSTRY ALERT: Fairfax County Topographic Data

The Fairfax County GIS and Mapping Services currently offers for purchase a GIS Digital Data product titled "Countywide Property & Topography." Included in the data is topography of the southeast and northeast quadrant of the county showing a 2' contour interval based on the vertical datum, North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88). Please note that NAVD 88 is not approved or permitted for land development projects submitted to Fairfax County. The use of the 2' contours based on NAVD 88 datum for planning or design could have significant impacts to project costs and schedules. There is also countywide topography showing a 5' contour interval based on the county's required vertical datum, National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 (NGVD 29).

Bull Run Exceptional Waters Nomination Withdrawn

On June 25, 2012, the State Water Control Board (SWCB) voted to withdraw the proposed Bull Run Exceptional Waters nomination.

Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Survey Window - Now Open

If you are undertaking a project that will impact tidal waters, you will be required to undertake surveys to document the presence or absence of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) within your project area. Example projects include boat piers/docks, marinas, and channel dredging operations.

Archeology Symposium Announcement and Call for Papers

In an effort to share the results of our research with our colleagues in the region and provide an opportunity for other researchers to do the same, WSSI will be hosting a free archeology symposium at WSSI's Gainesville, Virginia office. Artifacts from a mid 18th century slavery site in Fairfax County, Virginia (44FX0223), including unusual decorated colonoware sherds, will be available for examination.

WSSI Sponsors Wetlands Boot Camp for Educators

WSSI will be sponsoring local teachers to attend up to five individual sessions of a "Wetland Boot Camp" at its Gainesville, VA office, August 6-9, 2012. These day-long workshops will be presented by Environmental Concern, Inc., and provide K-12 teachers, environmental educators and program directors with the knowledge and necessary planning tools to facilitate environmental education programs within our local school systems.

WSSI to Host PaveDrain® Seminar

WSSI will host "Innovations in Pavement and Managing Storm Water Runoff," presented by PaveDrain®, at its Gainesville, VA office on August 2, 2012. The seminar will discuss the PaveDrain system, which consists of a Permeable Articulating Concrete Block/Mat (P-ACB/M) that creates a performance pavement by utilizing the patented arched reservoir to maximize onsite stormwater capacity during storm events. This improves the typical storm hydrograph and increases environmental performance while reducing stormwater infrastructure costs.
