WSSI Welcomes SySTEMic Challenge Winners

Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc. (WSSI) welcomed the winners of the inaugural SySTEMic Solutions Engineering Challenge for 6th-7th graders, as well as their teachers and families, for their June 10th awards ceremony. SySTEMIC Solutions is a Northern Virginia Community College Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) outreach program, helping students get excited about and interested in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This year’s Engineering Challenge focused on weather and biomes, an area of science closely linked with the work done here at WSSI. As a result, director Amy Harris suggested our Gainesville, Virginia office host the awards.

During the half-day event, students met WSSI engineers and scientists, learning not only how varied and exciting careers in the life sciences can be, but also some of the kinds of projects we work on day-to-day. Topics such as stream restoration, floodplain analysis, and endangered species identification and protection were presented. Winners were then given a tour of WSSI’s gold LEED-certified building and grounds.

WSSI is proud to support students interested in STEM fields. Congratulations to challenge winners Melanie Johnson from Saunders Middle School, Katelyn McCormack, Lauren Kim, and Kaitlyn Kitchen from Gainesville Middle School.
