Good News on Bats

NAHB, MBIA, HBAV, and volunteer members worked extremely hard over the last week to help generate some very positive results for the building industry regarding the Northern Long-Eared Bat (NLEB) – but not before at least three projects were stopped under construction by locality staff in Maryland because of a Baltimore Corps Public Notice. Now, in most cases, tree clearing in Maryland can now continue.

Wetlandia

The final version of the new definition of Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) was published in the Federal Register on June 29, 2015 (Federal Register Vol. 80, No. 124). Since the final draft was made public on May 27, 2015 (see Field Notes Vol. 23, No. 4), people have been trying to explain what it means, causing much angst – so Wetland Studies and Solutions Inc. (WSSI) staff decided to try to graphically depict the amazingly complicated WOTUS definition.

Traditionally Navigable Waters

The new definition of Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) still includes “Traditionally Navigable Waters” (TNW).

While there have been many heated discussions over whether or not the Federal Government should be able to regulate waters beyond the limits of TNWs – we found that very few people have tried to describe or map TNWs!

Inaugural Virginia Governor's One Shot Turkey Hunt Was a Huge Success

The Wildlife Foundation of Virginia (WFV), a nonprofit group dedicated to enhancing outdoor recreation opportunities within the Commonwealth, and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) hosted the inaugural Virginia Governor’s One Shot Turkey Hunt on April 18, 2015. The One Shot was a turkey hunting fund raising event that attracted 39 hunters and 37 guides from across Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia.

STEM Challenge Winners Visit WSSI

Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc. (WSSI) once again welcomed the winners of the SySTEMic Solutions Engineering Challenge for 6th-7th graders, along with their teachers and families, for their June 10th awards ceremony. SySTEMIC Solutions is a Northern Virginia Community College STEM outreach program, helping students get excited about and interested in the fields of Science,Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
